A graphic novel retelling, recontextualization, and remix of the West African Sundiata epic of Mandé origin.

From writer and artist Juni Ba (Monkey Meat) comes his debut graphic novel that asks what dark secret lies at the heart of stories, and what purpose do their tellers truly serve?

Inspired by West African folklore and stories handed down over centuries, Djeliya follows the adventures of Mansour Keita, last prince of a dying kingdom, and Awa Kouyaté, his loyal Djeli, or ‘royal storyteller,’ as they journey to meet the great wizard who destroyed their world and then withdrew into his tower, never to be seen again.

“Djeliya hits all the right notes for larger-than-life storytelling.”

“Sometimes a comic comes along that truly reads like nothing else you’ve encountered in ages, and writer/artist Juni Ba’s debut graphic novel Djeliya is that kind of comic.”

“Djeliya is a winding epic fairytale, a fantastical reimagining of West African folklore. It has a sharp sense of humor combined with stunning art…There’s so much to enjoy on every page.”

“Djeliya is a very cool book, a burst of color and magic, themed around the aftermath of colonialism, a book without an easy comparison.”

“A gorgeously rich afro-fantasy adventure, the result of what happens when Cartoon Network seeps into a young boy from Senegal.”
